Kisah Gigi – How to get your kids and toddlers to brush their teeth

If you asked me what I like the most about Azman, the answer is his teeth. haha! He has (almost) perfect teeth, straight and small like cute jagung manis. My teeth, however, are big and sharp like a descendant of megalodon, but they are white as I use the best charcoal powder to which you can check the review yourself. While both Azman and I have coffee stained set of teeth but at least I am not jongos la… Biar gigi tajam-tajam bak pontianak tapi tak jongang ok? Tak sesuai langsung pontianak gigi jongang..

Anyway, I think it is very important to have nice straight healthy teeth because really, I wouldn’t have dated anybody with bad teeth. And sometimes, I see people with beautiful faces but once they smile or speak, oops I changed my mind. That’s how important nice teeth is to me.

In fact after raya ni I am gonna get my teeth whiten. I heard it is expensive but Azman has RM5k limit for dental claims from his office, I am soooo utilizing that. And as for my kids, they were trained to brush their teeth since they were very small. Before they could do it themselves, I would clean their teeth for them, every morning and night. Alhamdulillah Miki and Rafa has no dental cavity so far. I am very relieved. If my small kids have bad cavity yang sampai gigi hitam-hitam tu, I’d probably be down, hit with depression for failing in being a mom. But Miki, being 7 years old is currently in the phase of getting his milk teeth replaced with permanent, adult teeth. So he is currently rongak in his front incisors. I am very nervous takut the gigi grows senget-senget!

In Malaysia, statistics have shown than 70% of 12 year old children suffer from dental decay. In a national survey carried out in 2005, it was revealed that among five-year-old children, 8 out of 10 suffer from dental caries. The same study also showed that, on average, every five-year old child has 6 out of 20 milk teeth affected by caries.

I was asked several times on how do I encourage Rafa to brush his teeth properly when other kids lari sebatu,  hated the brush, or lick the toothpaste instead. I am no expert, but if I were share my experience on how too get your kids to brush their teeth, here’s how:

1) Explain to them why it is important to have clean teeth
2) Brush and floss your teeth in front of them and let them see how
3) Make the activity fun, not stressed
4) Invest on cute and fun toothbrushes for motivation
5) Make sure the tooth brush is soft and will not their gums
