My Ramadhan Memories

The month of Ramadhan will always bring back sweet memories. I can’t really remember when I started to fast, however, I am sure I started during my primary school years because I managed to keep all my school allowances of RM0.30 per day and become a little rich man at the end of Ramadhan with around RM5 in my pocket!!

If I could complete all the 30 days of fasting, my mom would request for all my saving and she will exchange it with a sacred red color note, RM10. Having ten bucks back then was so great, I almost thought it was in my dreams because even during Hari Raya, my total Duit Raya collection could hardly come close to that amount…

That’s why in every Ramadhan as a grown up, each time I get hold of RM10 notes….I will always remember the day that I first got hold of it, appreciate it and dream about it…

I have a lot more nice memories of Ramadhan…Once when I was in Zaaba College, University Malaya, my friend thrown a cat from the forth floor because the cat ate his fish for buka puasa (the breaking of fast meal)… That useless cat! It survived the ordeal though, I wonder what had happened if the one who ate the fish is a fellow friend and not a cat?

And do you know that we can get great free food at the mosque? My friends and I was so broke those days, we would go mosque-hunting through out Klang Valley in the search for the best free food available…. From the Mosque in Damansara to KLIA to TTDI but the best one I tell is the TNB Mosque at Bangsar…

I have the experience of combining buka puasa and sahur too… because once I slept at 5pm and wake up at 5am… haha!

But the best memory of all is when I was in secondary school…

I studied in a boarding school, Sekolah Sultan Muhamad Jiwa. At 6.00pm, we already have to queue up for buka puasa meal while our sahur meal started around 1~3 in the morning. The meals were always terrible and they also serve it too early especially for Sahur. That’s why most of us choose to have Maggi Mee instead of Dining Hall meals for sahur!!
maggi mee dalam gayungSince we had no HOT water in our hostel, we have to prepare instant maggi mee by using normal tap water. Here is how we do it:

First put the maggi mee into our “gayung/cebok” or the small pail used for bathing and other bathroom businesses. And then just fill up with cold tap water from the toilet and keep it at the top of toilet partition wall for the whole night. When we wake up at around 5am, the maggi mee is ready to eat!!! But…if we don’t wake up at 5am…the maggi mee will turn out just like laksa!..hahahahahahaaa…
I am not sure who actually started this brilliant idea in preparing the maggi mee. Believe it or not, it is the best meal for sahur at that time! Come to think about it today, I can hardly believe that I have actually eaten that kind of food!

Do you have any nice memory to share? How about sharing it in this post comments…?? Selamat Berpuasa!

  1. ish ish ish.. hang ni.. tak takutka segala bapak microorganisma bertakung kat dlm ayaq tap hang tuh..

patutla hangpa sengal semacam je huahuahua. makan megi bertakung uhuhu

  2. mm..ayaq..chegu nak buat rekod masak maggi kawah!! .. :sinchan: kepeh kepeh kepeh 12juta bungkus maggi utk masak maggi kawah..!!

  3. something to do with maggi. masa kat terengganu dulu, mana la ada mee bandung, nak cari pun payah, apatah di waktu sahur. tapi nasib aku lebih baik la sket dari azman san, kitaorg kat bilik ada kemudahan utk masak air panas iaitu dengan menggunakan bekas yg diisi dengan besi (yg namanya aku dah lupa…alaaaa..besi panas yg letak dlm bekas utk masak air tu). setelah maggi direndam bersama air panas, masukan telur dan udang kering serta kacau. pastu ambik biskut marie dalam 6 keping, pecahkan dan masukan sekali dalam kuah maggi perisa kari..ha ha ha ha…maka jadilah mee bandung. biskut tu utk buat kuah pekat dan ada rasa manis manis sket, manakala udang kering tu nak bagi bau je…hak hak hak.

tapi, bukak posa tetap kat masjid sbb makanan kat dewan makan mcm tuuuuuuuuut tapi terawih tu hak hak hak….belum tentu lagi kat masjid..

  4. hahahaha…salmegi…aku pun masih ingat nama itu! muka dia x ingat doh. cerita psl maggi, reminds me of some selfish friends yg telah menggunakan thermos flask aku untuk memasak maggi didalamnya…dan tanpa persetujuan aku…dan tanpa membasuhnya slps disalahgunakan…takyah aku sebutkan nama dia. bak kata pepatah india: “makan cili pedas”.

yg sorang lg tuh plak, masak kopok leko yg baru dibawanya dr kampung menggunakan cerek letrik aku…slps kejadian yg menyayat hati itu, ayaq masak tak sesedap dulu lagi!

  5. those days waktu imsak was when the muazzin finished his azan. let say u wake up during azan subuh, u still have, umm.. lessay about 4-5 minutes more to eat. the longer the azan, the more u can eat.

that’s what a friend told me, as told to him by his great2 ancestors.

  6. aku memahami perasan apeckx………sbb cerek letrik aku juga berperisa pelbagai jenis makanan, lantas nak maki hamun, tak sampai hati sbb roomate dan jugak anak org susah. maka, aku humban je cerek tu sbb sakit hati. dan sejak hari itu lah aku masak air guna besi panas je huhuhuhu

  7. apecks;
aku terharu dengar cite ko…terngiang ngiang jugak cerita kesedihan ko tu suatu masa dulu.
dan cite kat za’ba dibulan puasa jugak mengingatkan aku kisah bagaimana bilik aku dijadikan tempat tgk video tape.
masalahnya…setiap kali wayang tutup 10minit sebelum azan subuh..bilik aku penuh sampah sarap ..!!..puuiihhh…

video player aku tibai kakak aku punya..dan rakan2 yg lain..tibai TV..errr..TV sapa ye???…apecks jugak ke???..heheheheh

  8. Nasib baik Azman yang buat megi cebok, kalau Diyana yang buat, mau pengsan aku dibuatnya…..

  9. oh, by the way, perkara memasak maggi dalam gayung tu samalah macam kasut buatan gombak. –> Apa salahnya?

  10. I have to aggree with D….seres loya mendengarnya. Cebok tuh dah diguna utk pelbagai guna di TANDAS dan anda bleh menggunakannya utk rendam maggi dengan TAP WATER?? woooo…u r desperate at that time huh? Nasib baik lah hang sihat dan dpt meneruskan hidup.

But..it’s good bleh ingat memori masa posa. I don’t think I remember any special memories..hmmmmm. So sad. 🙁 But this year is a memorable one indeed.

  11. I’m your jr both in SSMJ as well as UM,when u in form 5 i am a nerdy form 1,ahahha. i do recognize ur face….i love read ur blog. all the memories related to me since u in school and same college (7th) UM.
