Lessons From Maleficent – A Yummy Mummy’s Movie Review

Way to go Disney!

I have been meaning to say that the moment I watched Frozen for the first time. Now after I watched Maleficent;  I can conclude that Disney have broaden their horizons and instil new messages to send out to their audiences and fans through their newest films. Not entirely feminism and women’s rights but these hidden wisdom tips are useful for children and youth especially girls.

Maleficent is beautiful. Both the movie and the character played by Angelina Jolie. I enjoy it very  much just like any other Disney movie I have seen before. But in Maleficent I managed to gather a few lessons in life. Tell me what you think.

Lesson number 1 :
Maleficent looks fierce and she calls Aurora “beasty”.

These days, you may find people out there who have not the best demeanour. They make rough jokes and they tease. They may wear the shortest skirts and their hair are dyed in 7 different colours. They may different than you and you may find that irritating,  but remember they may also be the kindest of people. Do not let the outside appearance fool you. Treat a tattooed person the way you would treat a well-dressed gentleman. Your kindness will shine through and they will then treat you nicely too.

Cute ones like these fairies get trusted easily but actually they are pretty useless. LOL

 Lesson number 2:
Aurora was kissed by a Prince but it was Maleficent, Aurora’s mother figure herself that broke the spell.

There are so many cases these days in Malaysia, when girls elope with their boyfriends to Lombok, to Bangladesh, even to Nepal. These girls leaves behind the comfort and security of home with their families to pursue lives with what they think is the true love. Some of these girls may be happy but most them suffered and then when Prince Charming reveals his true colors, they realize that the beautiful castle they hoped for was actually a barn or a chicken coop. That’s when the girls come running back to their families who have been sacrificing their lives to save them. Girls, don’t let handsome faces and romantic words pull you away from your parents and families who have been taking care of you all your lives. At least get their blessings. This is clearly portrayed in Frozen and of course in Maleficent. Remember, TRUE LOVE is so commonly associated with newly found boyfriends but the truth is all of us have already have our TRUE LOVES, they are our families!

Lesson number 3
Stephen betrayed Maleficent and he was consumed by his dark past

People commit malicious acts under influences that come from within. Like greed, vengeance  and jealousy. Stephan’s hunger for power lead him to betray Maleficent. He was happy for a while but later on he was so engulfed in paranoia, that he hardly functions as the King he became. Maleficent also regrets casting the spell to Aurora tries to take it back. So next time when you are about to take an action, think of its consequences. Your own action could haunt and destroy your own lives.

 Lesson number 4
Maleficent overcome her past and love again

Let it go!! and I am not just talking about some magical ice frosting power from your hands. When Maleficent was betrayed by Stephan, she carried that hurt for so long that it defined her identity. It was through her relationship with Aurora that she was able to break through the hurt, pain and betrayal she felt to become who she is before. She finally learned to let go of that pain and love again. We can all relate to this in our lives today. Forget what has happened. You deserved to be happy. Forgive and forget.

 Lesson number 5
Stephan drugged Maleficent and cut off her wings when she slept

Girls, watch what you are drinking, please!

Thank you Disney for broadening your horizons! We need more movies like this with real life values in them while still be appropriate for kids and realistic and entertaining for adults. Thumbs up for Maleficent.
